Admission

  • Students must have a high school diploma or successfully completed GED
  • Success TABE Test >7.0
  • Up to date Immunizations (Includes TB skin test and Tetanus Booster)
  • Must be 18 years old
  • Criminal Background check information will be given at Allied Health Orientation not required for Billing and Coding class

Course Descriptions:

Arrow right Nurse Aide I

The 190 hour course introduces basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients, residents or clients in the health care setting. Topics include communication, safety, patient rights, personal care, vital signs, elimination, nutrition, restorative care and rehabilitation in the long-term care setting. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Test.

Roanoke Chowan Community College is a North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services approved Nurse Aide Training Program.

Requirements

High School Diploma or High School Equivalent must be 18 years of age

TB SKIN test prior to clinical rotation

Arrow right Nurse Aide II

The 190-hour Nurse Aide II course prepares the graduate to perform complex skills for patient care. The course includes theory, lab and clinical experience. A written and skills competency evaluation is required to successfully complete the course. Once the student has successfully completed the course and competency evaluation their name will be listed as a Nurse Aide II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Arrow right Phlebotomy Training & Clinical

The 220-hour course provides instruction in the skills needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. A clinical rotation is required to successfully complete the course. Students must complete 100 hours of clinical. (Included in the 220 hours)

Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques. This is a certificate-level course. Students that successfully complete class, lab and clinical are eligible to test through ASCP (American Society of Certified Phlebotomy)

Arrow right Healthcare Billing and Coding

This 150-hour ONLINE course prepares an individual for entry level healthcare billing and coding positions. Course topics can include but are not limited to the roles and responsibilities of this position, managed health care, life cycle of an insurance claim, legal and regulatory considerations, coding regulations, reimbursement issues, claim instructions, medical terminology, filing commercial claims, insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and Workers' Compensation. Upon completion, students should also be able to utilize MS Windows and the Internet to effectively retrieve billing-related information and updates.

Arrow right Medication Aide

This 24-hour in person course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified as a Medication Aide. The course will cover the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics will include medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology, and legal implications. Upon completion, students should be able to take the competency exam and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. The Medication Aide must be a Nurse Aide I, in the State of North Carolina to work as a Medication Aide.

Food Safety (150 hours)

Medical Nutrition Therapy (150 hours)

This 300 total hour course includes a series of two semesters that comprise the dietary manager training required for certification by the National Dietary Managers Association. After successful completion of all 2 semesters students may sit for a national exam to become certified dietary managers through Association of Nutrition and Food Service Professionals. Roanoke Chowan Community College is ANFP approved as certified training school. Both Food Safety and Nutrition Therapy are taught by a registered dietician. The first semester Food safety, sanitation, accident prevention food prep and basic food groups, vitamins, minerals, energy nutrients, and metabolism. Medical Nutrition Therapy second semester includes diet modifications in response to illness, disease, growth and development or old age, professional roles, responsibilities, personnel management, and problem solving.

The 720-hour hybrid course Medical Assistant is a comprehensive certificate course. MA is divided into 2 sections; each section is 360 hours. Part I provides classroom training experiences necessary to prepare students to progress to Part II which provides skills and clinical rotation. Students must successfully complete Part I to progress to Part II. Students must be successful in Part I and II to be eligible to take the Registered Medical Assistant National Exam.

Arrow right Pharmacy Technician

This 210-hour course provides instruction in pharmacy technical procedures for preparing and dispensing drugs in the hospital and retail settings under supervision of a registered pharmacist. Topics include drug packaging and labeling, out-patient dispensing procedures, controlled substance procedures, inventory control, and non-sterile compounding. Students must be successful in the written/class section to be eligible to complete the clinical component of 70 clinical hours.

Roanoke Chowan Community College is an approved college through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Once a student successfully completes the course, they can register to take the National Pharmacy Technician Exam at .
